Aquarium UV Sterilization; disinformation
I continue to follow the threads in forums, aquarium items, and blogs about ultraviolet sterilization. It still amazes me much misinformation spread about it, some masked in science. As I have said many times before, a UV sterilizer is not essential for any aquarium, however, even the goldfish that I have kept tanks with as many variables (the similarities) in place as possible and noted differences and that includes thriving reef aquariums.
What I also find interesting is that many of these same people that trash then indicate a skimmer of essential proteins. I have kept in tanks with and without Skimmers (again all possible variables similar or as close as possible), and noted changes and resulted in measurable parameters that are useful, but often not by much and clay filters, DIY OSD or similar filters can often replace (as well as UV Sterilizers and good lighting in the head as MH).
Back to the topic, here's a thread I will comment. In this thread, a person that offered a test (though not perfect science, but how good can often be in this hobby) came under attack dog style stack without the support others to their statements other than criticize his methods:
Arthur # 1 (Edited):
"If you read some scientific papers on the UV sterilization of water you know you usually talk about a standard tube length, 40W mercury UV lamp 3 "in diameter and water passing speed of about 500 gph or less. This type of installation offers a dose of about 18,000 mW-sec/cm2. In order to increase the dose required to reduce the water flow. For example, 250 GPH
flow above the lights before the dose would be exposed to nearly twice the 34,000 mW-sec/cm2. This dose is sufficient to kill bacteria, yeast, some mold spores, viruses and algae. And some degree aquarium lamps to achieve this effect with unicellular algae. To kill the protozoa (such as an acquaintance from school, "Paramecium" or our cause ich "Cryptocaryon irritans)
I would have to increase the dose.
My comment:
First, most studies show that I have read by 10,000 MW by se/cm2 for bacteria. Secondly, I read the articles have shown that 30,000 + mW-sec/cm2 with 90 watt bulbs at a rate of 200 gallons per minute (which even I find it hard to believe, in my view often depends on whose data you look at. Thirdly, there is more to treating Cryptocaryon just out of sterilization law (I would not want my high in the Reef Aquarium !!!), There is also the redox potential Sterilizers and also improve water quality in general.
Finally, each unit is different and there are many variables of age of the bulb (even a Light Bulb 3-month-old has lost 25%), temperature, design of the unit, the prefilter (a pre-filter greatly improves sterilization microns), and the wealth that I have found to be the best at 20 GPH (or less for units rather aquarium applications).

Without a hospital tank, adding a new fish was always dangerous. When I was
No UV on the tank, once you fish began to show signs of life
The hope that the fish was usually less than 3 days, could not take the
combined efforts of the parasites and the treatment of copper. Other fish in the
tank invariably show signs of infestation later, but usually do
by. Once the first sterilizer was added the rate at which the disease
spread decreased, and my theory is that some of the parasites were killed in
free-swimming stage. After that, the first fish to show signs normally
survived, and some of the others fish never show any signs at all.
Once you add a second sterilizer, I have never lost a fish to ich, but it could
the infestation occasionally. In short, there was a direct relationship with the
wattage of UV rays and the intensity and speed of propagation of the disease.
Since I was not religious in changing the bulbs (and the bulbs receive less
effective over time), I was able to notice that an outbreak
worse when the sterilizer bulb was very old. Again, this did not happen once
There were two execution units.
My comment:
This person probably had decent low-flow units, prefilter, and useful insight.
Without going into details too (my articles have greatly expanded on this), as noted above, there are other aspects of UV sterilizers as redox potential, this is not a test difficult to do, simply try the Redox without UV and then run a test for a week and again, easily! Person that many of the garbage that people like this does not have considered all the variables, if they failed, I've seen UV sterilizers do nothing. These were often running watts 8 Units in a sump with a flow rate of 800 gph, a calcified, and quartz sleeve prefilter poor. This is not to say, a unit of 8 watts (or less) can not work, but not in those conditions (and in the case of a mark which is mentioned, a poor design of the mixing chamber as well). The lagoon aquarium "> 15 Watt UV Sterilizer Custom've done has worked well in most every application I have put in (the target = "target" title = "Compact UV Sterilizer Quartz"> Terminator Compact UV Sterilizers good too, one of the best compact UV rays that I used along with Resun and Coralife).
What is an ultraviolet sterilizer is a tool for the rearing of your aquarium along with water changes, filtration, skimmers and more. In many of my side by side with and without the UV applications was just one more piece the puzzle of the water quality improved in admittedly an artificial environment (unless you want to delude ourselves). I can not think of an experiment, in particular, with several tanks of colorful fish in a large customer of mine. All these deposits, in particular, had Filter Cartridges, cleaning and the same schedule food and biological load, the only difference was UV sterilizers. The difference in the amount of sick goldfish, growth and color was very evident (Vice President were not not doing this experiment, and even commented on why some tanks was better others, after which he installed in us all UV sterilizers).
