Water Softeners – Tips to remove hard water from his home in the Act
As a continuation of previous article on water softeners, below is an explanation of the types of water softeners that can be used to minimize the effects of hard water around the house … including pros and cons of each and potential health problems that may arise.
Chemical Water Softeners
This is when specific chemicals added to water to control water hardness.
The types of chemicals that can be used include soda and borax. These chemicals form an insoluble precipitate with calcium and magnesium minerals in water. The mineral ions then can not interfere with the cleaning efficiency, but the precipitate makes water cloudy and accumulate on surfaces. The disadvantage of precipitating water softeners is that they can increase the alkalinity of the water and this can damage the skin and other materials being cleaned.
The second type water softeners do not contain phosphates to collect precipitated calcium and magnesium ions. No precipitate formed and not increase alkalinity. If used in sufficient quantity, without precipitation water softeners will help dissolve soap residue for a period of time.
Mechanical Water Softeners
These are devices that can be permanently installed in the plumbing system to permanently delete calcium and magnesium.
They operate in the ion exchange process in which the water passes through a media bed, usually with accounts resin that is supersaturated with sodium. The ion exchange process takes place as hard water passes up through the softening material. The hardness of minerals are listed by the grains, while at the same time, sodium in the resin beads is released into the water.
When accounts are saturated with calcium and magnesium, which must be re-renewed. Recharging is done by passing a saline solution through the accounts. The saline solution containing sodium replaces the calcium and magnesium minerals in water that is extracted from it.
As explained above, hard water treated with a water softener exchange sodium ions was added. Ion exchange softening process adds sodium at a rate of about 8 mg / liter for each grain of hardness removed per gallon of water. For example, if the water has a hardness of 10 grains per gallon, will contain about 80 mg / liter of sodium after being softened in a water softener ion exchange if all hardness minerals are removed.
The addition of sodium to the water in these cases is potentially a problem for people with high blood pressure in some individuals may be advised by his doctor not to install water softeners that use this method. In this case you may want to soften only hot water, or perhaps to bypass the water softener with a cold water pipe to supply water without softening that can be used for drinking and cooking.
