Free kit Intorducing Home Pregnancy Test
Reproductive health is a crucial part of general health and a central element of human development. Between reproductive women (age 15-49), the burden of poor reproductive health is much greater than the disease burden of tuberculosis, respiratory infections, injuries motor vehicle, homicide and violence. Women run the risk of pregnancy, childbirth and unsafe abortion, take most responsibility for regulating the fertility and are socially and biologically more vulnerable to reproductive tract infections and sexually transmitted diseases. The National Population Policy (India), 2000, reaffirms the commitment of government towards voluntary choice, with knowledge and consent of citizens while availing of reproductive health services, and the continuation of the target free approach in providing family planning services.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), Government of India through its National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) has introduced a rapid test kits home pregnancy (Nishchay). The program Nishchay not a program for promoting the pregnancy test kit alone, but is an entry point to RCH and family planning services for women who want quality and assured RCH and FP services.
Important key issues addressed by Nishchay are:
1. Low percentage of women starting ANC in the first quarter due to late detection
2. Contraceptive Procurement (IUD / pill) did not start after ruling out pregnancy
3. High unsafe abortions due to late detection of pregnancy
The key program strategies include community awareness, especially among eligible couples in Home Based Pregnancy Test Card and RCH services, increased utilization of RCH and FP services, following the results of the test. The major activities include capacity building of ASHAs (Accredited Social Health Activist) through with field specialists and NGO experience, brand and logo using the visibility media campaign, outreach to the community using the media in mid-campaign, and the integration of the card in the surveillance system of NRHM / RCH-II.
Implementation of the program is in all Indian states and the UT. The states have been classified into groups of high priority, medium and low based on NFHS-3 data on deliveries and institutional birth rate. In the first phase, the program was launched in the following priority states 11high – Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland.
The implementation team was made at the headquarters of Hindustan Latex Planning Promotion Trust family, including a Senior Program Manager (Atul Bahl), training managers, training officers and a communications officer. State-level consultants were hired in the states of additional support in the supervision of NGOs and land activities. The program manager is assigned the responsibility of national extension program and related activities.
As expected, the service implementation strategy is being addressed through capacity building of ASHAs in understanding the pregnancy test card, making it easily accessible to all eligible couples in the community and monitoring the result. The material Relevant training was conceptualized and designed for the training of ASHAs. These were shared with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare have been printed and then approval. NGOs at district level were contacted in all states, meetings and master trainers identified they were trained by the project implementation team. Special training materials are designed for them too.
The generation Demand is through the use of media and media in mid-campaign by using local people, education – entertainment mode through mobile units. The program has been very well received by audiences and early detection of pregnancy offers many advantages for both mother and fetus. Many of the benefits Doctors rely on early detection, including social, and emotional well being and avoidance of drugs, irradiation, and teratogenic others.
