The sump pump and your basement

The work of the sump pump is to prevent flooding in the basement of his house. Most basements have what is called a sink designed to be a collection point for water that seeps in In normal situations, a sump pump removes this water accumulation your basement without incident.

It is widely believed that the invention of the sump pump was first used in the northeastern United States – New England or the Great Lakes area – used to eliminate the problem of flooding the basement. Sump pumps are usually included in modern new homes built including a basement. And adding this type of flood prevention equipment for older homes, owners often see their insurance rates went down significantly.

Sump pumps come in two basic types. The type of submersible and the pedestal type. The pedestal type pump is designed with the motor located above the sink accessibility for maintenance. It is more noticeable, which could be a problem if your basement is decorated.

Submersible pumps are just that – completely submerged in the sump pit. The interiors are completely sealed to prevent electrical problems, but is a bit difficult to access in the event of a failure – water stagnant.

Required in each sump pump is a Check Valve – a water valve in a way. It allows the Water Pump and piping drainage, while preventing water from siphoning back into the basement. A cover is also advisable to keep small critters like children of plugging the pipes, because the flow through.

Only the power normal household 120v required in most installations. Unfortunately, in emergency conditions, power normal household is not available. A battery backup power system consists of a regular car battery and a power generator he does very well in this situation too.

A program of regular maintenance or five years is recommended to keep the sump pump in basement conditions trusted for years. The sand and dirt should be removed from the mouth of the sinkhole. Otherwise the life of components and checking the valve can be too low, allowing water to flow into your basement.

To clean the sump pump, always disconnect the first system, and sediment scoop the pit. You can also use a wet / dry shop vacuum for this part of the job. Finally, test the system to reconnect the pipes removed, fill the hole with a little water and make sure everything works as expected.
