Pet Cichlid Fish
Cichlids are fish in the Cichlidae family in the order Perciformes. The family Cichlidae, Perciformes families of large fish, is so large and diverse. There are at least 1300 species scientifically described, making it one of the largest families in vertebrates. Many species are discovered each year, and many species remain undescribed. The actual number of species is uncertain, with estimates of between 1300 and 3000 species, and 1900 suggesting a source species. Cichlids span a wide range of body sizes of species as small as 2.5 centimeters (1.0 inches) in length to larger species approaching 1 meter (3 feet) long. As a group, cichlids exhibit a similarly wide diversity of body shapes, ranging from species strongly compressed laterally across species that are cylindrical and elongated. In general, however, cichlids tend to be of medium size, oval and slightly laterally compressed, and generally very similar to North American sunfishes in terms of morphology, behavior and ecology.
Many of cichlids, particularly the tilapias are important food fishes, while others are valued fish. Many species, including angelfish, Oscars, and the disk, are also highly prized in the aquarium trade. Cichlids are also the family of vertebrates with the largest number of endangered species, most these are found in the haplochromine group. Cichlids are particularly known to have evolved rapidly in a large number of closely related species but morphologically different in the Great Lakes, in particular, Tanganyika, Victoria, Malawi, and Edward. The diversity of cichlids in the African Great Lakes is important for studying speciation in evolution. Many of the cichlids that have been accidentally or deliberately in freshwater outside their natural range have become nuisance species, for example tilapia in the southern United States.
