Where can I buy UVC / germicidal lamps with different wavelengths?
I am doing a project for the Science Fair including UVC lights with different wavelengths, but I can only seem to find stores that sell one type.
UVC sources are available in cold cathode, Floro and Metal Halide technology. Low pressure mercury discharge used in the flowers and fountains has cold cathode lines 185 and 254nm. The tubes are only available in 254nm and 254nm and 185 mixed. I have no U.S. source, but it sure makes Thomas register. 185nm line produced ozone in the air in case of operating precautions are recommended to address this toxic and corrosive gas. Needless to say, both lines cause radiation damage to the skin (including cancer) and eyes (cataracts (and injury to the retina at 185nm)), precautions to be taken due to minimize the radiological risk. In the high intensity hand, I have not been able to locate the details of the spectrum of metal halide sources, but I'd be surprised if they differed in bulk. Finally, a simple house made of carbon-arc lamp produces broadband UVC radiation included, so if you have a grid on a quartz glass substrate, which could be a viable source. Carbides can be obtained from suitable suppliers of local cinema. HTH. Sincerely, Dan.
