Starting a Marine Aquarium – The very first considerations

Seeing the photos of a healthy Marine Fish only or Reef Aquarium in books or on Internet, or better yet, in fact, in a public aquarium will cause most people to appreciate the beauty and general fascination of them. Some people wonder if there a part, and the thought of just going away. Others, however, will not forget so easily and wants to explore further the possibility of having your own home aquarium.

If the fan knows that the potential for a friend who already has a healthy marine aquarium, then it is a source of advice available already. The friends have gone through all the investigations and considerations. Often, however, the hobbyist will need to find potential itself. That is very good, as the aquarium system is well understood. Then he can not be a marine aquarist known available, so what is the first step? Rushing to the local store and buy an aquarium and a few bits of equipment that the shop says it takes is totally wrong.

The first step is to follow a scaffolding planning. This scaffold will be the basis for all decisions to be made in building the system. There are very few decisions on the way and things can be confusing even for someone who has experience in the field of Freshwater Aquarium. The scaffolding will help.

The scaffold has to prepare the budding marine aquarist form indicating a possible cost of providing basic equipment. Often marine aquarists have equipment laying about. This could have been caused by the improvement because the original equipment was not adequate and needs to be replaced. Money spent perhaps need not have been.

Therefore, the scaffold then. The following is a list of items and base notes. It is an attempt and is not intended to open a full path from zero to a fantastic fish or tank only reef. What it does is give the example to follow in the path to a successful aquarium. No doubt there are additional considerations arise in the way, and that's as it should, means that planning is working. Each stage of the planning needs of individual consideration, and not often more of a decision take. Along the way, research with books and / or the Internet is useful or necessary.

Where is the site of the practice of aquarium?
Try to choose a place away from direct sunlight to help control proper lighting. There should be heavy and / or noisy traffic crossing homes (reasonable traffic is acceptable). It needs to be a reliable energy supply, ie. outlets. Overall easy access to the aquarium is necessary. If the floors are suspended, account the intensity of soil – aquarium filled with sea water are strong!

What size tank?
The aquarium should not remain in the ordinary furniture, but in a properly designed support. The aquarium may need a hood. These should be taken into account. Then, the space available for the aquarium can be considered.

What kind of system?
The system can be only or Reef Fish. This decision affects other decisions later. Most opt for a reef.

Sink or sink?
A sink is a small tank attached to the principal. Provides additional water capacity to the system, allowing the heaters, beds Sand and protein skimmers to keep out of the aquarium display. The sink can be next to or below the display aquarium. A sump in any type of system is highly recommended. (If a sump is to be used, the main aquarium will be drilled to allow the plumbing to get water from the aquarium to the sink. Then is pumped back up again.) Note: If a DSB (deep sand bed) or plenum (a raised OSD) is to be used, the sand bed area must be at least 2/3rds of The base area of the main aquarium. The sand bed should be at least 4 "deep. Consider the cost of the fine sand of the DSB. A DSB in the sump is highly recommended. Allow sufficient space for an area divided by the return pump seawater.

Enlightenment?
Is the system only or a reef fish? If the fish only, then two marine fluorescent enough. If reefs then:

Hard corals.
Best halide lighting, supplemented by actinic fluorescent tubes. T5 fluorescent tubes can be used (white and actinic marine equally mixed), but do not penetrate the sea water as background.

Soft corals.
It is sufficient to use fluorescent lamps T5 (Actinic white and mixed). Halide lighting can be used, however, and will not be detrimental (to ensure corals are exposed to light varieties).

The net capacity of seawater aquarium and sump (if used)? This can be calculated easily once the size of the aquarium and sump have been decided. This gallonage will be excessive because, when rocks and sand is added, it will decrease. Therefore, reducing the amount by 10%. This will not remain correct, but gives a reasonable compensation for displacement.

The circulation of seawater?
The sea Water Aquarium in the screen will have to be distributed to the health of the inhabitants of whatever kind, but particularly in a reef system. It is recommended that used a minimum of two Powerheads to accomplish this. The turnover of sea water on a reef should be about ten to twenty times the net capacity of the aquarium display (excludes housing) per hour, depending on the occupants of coral .. In fish only systems, may be less.

Skimmer?
A Protein Skimmer is essential for most of the systems (*), particularly when there is lack of experience. The device is very useful as it contributes significantly to the quality of water. The protein skimmer should be sized around double network capacity of seawater aquarium sump (if used). Now that the use of a collector oil (or not) has decided to consider the possibility of using a separate wing or skimmer.
(* A bit of mud-based system designs do not require a spoon.)

Heating?
The net gallonage of the system is known, so the need for heating may be considered. (Note: it is better to buy two heaters since this is a good safety feature for aquarium inhabitants. Each heater should be half of the demand for heating.) In warm areas, where temperatures are always above 80 degrees F, the use of a seawater cooler (cooling) will replace the heaters.

Back bomb?
This only applies if you use a sink. The sea water, once it has run into the crankcase, should be returned to the main aquarium. A pump is needed for this. As a guide, flow through the sump should be two or three times the net capacity of the system per hour. When considering the bomb, recalled factor in the elevator, which is the height from the level of the pump to the highest point of seawater that reaches back before entering the main aquarium.

'Rock Live'.
This is used to end of filtration (which is excellent for this) and for the construction of the reefs. It can also be used in a single system of fish. Allow 1 ½ pounds every gallon that is found throughout the system. There are other methods of filtration, but "rock" along with a DSB in a sump is highly recommended.

Reverse Osmosis (R / S) of the unit?
The R / S is a unit of tap water filtration device that removes almost all (about 95 to 98%) contaminants unwanted. Therefore, the mixing of sea water is at its best from the beginning. It is highly recommended that R / O water is always used, including the first fill the tank. R / O units gallons per day come in different outputs. Remember that usually the tank is completely filled once. The normal routine change of quantity of water is 10% gallonage of the network system of the week.

Dry salt mixture?
There are several brands on the market. If keeping a reef system, get one that is "designed" to reefs, such as extra attention is given to the calcium content, etc. of fish systems can only use 'standard' is mixed and as described above.

Make a list.
Since each subject has gone through, find and write the probable cost. If electric power also note the (W).

The evidence. When every item has a price, add up. This represents a general guide to the cost of installation. If electric add up the power. Divide the total wattage of 1000, this will give kilowatts. The cost per kilowatt of electricity will be released. Multiply the number of kilowatt, including any fraction, the cost per kilowatt, this is the approximate cost to run electrical system updated. For weekly, multiply by seven. Monthly, multiply by four. Etc. (Note: the lights can be considered as 50% of the day. Heaters / coolers will not be all the time, but it is difficult to establish a guideline percentage.)

OK. The list is there and that indicates the cost guideline aquariums and electric operating costs of the system. These will not be fully accurate, but close enough to discourage any desire to have an aquarium or to keep going. There are other costs, of course. For example, it has taken account of the fish and / or corals that will inhabit the aquarium. Then, additional equipment, often seen later, we could get, like a calcium reactor, a de-nitrator, or cartridge filter, etc. Perhaps the coarse coral sand, ½ to 1 "deep, will be used as a decoration in the aquarium display.

Without But the scaffolding has achieved its purpose, which is usually the new guide amateur on a path that works its way through what can be a confusing start.

After the scaffolding, there is still much to do. Many answers can be found in articles listed on this site (http://www.aquaristsonline.com).

Appropriate items can be worked through one by one. All remaining questions can go on the forum. The Internet is an excellent resource for knowledge. Typing a name, for example, marine Aquarium Lighting, etc. in a search engine should produce a good response. Then, of course, there are books. There's nothing like an hour of reading of bedtime!
