How do I clean my aquarium Sponge Filter without scattering dirt in the water?
When I take my sponge filter (in a vacuum) of Part lower outside the Aquarium Tank until all dirt and mud spill in the water. Not much left to wash the sponge and the land is still floating in the water. I tried to grab the sponge with a paper towel or plastic bag in hand to keep dirt from floating, but seems to work.
You do not need to change / clean the sponge unless you pick it up and press with fingers and not recover. If you still rebounding, do nothing with it. The sponge is the main presenter of bacteria beneficial in the tank. If you change it, you will most likely send your tank through a mini-cycle that will stress the fish out. If you press and no rebound try taking it out and rinse in a bucket of water treated with decholorinator. After rinsing in water, if it still does not bounce, then you should replace it completely. You should not have to do this more than once every six months (or more).
