Aquarium Plants in the home aquarium
Adding live plants to an aquarium does more than enhance aesthetics – Plants provide shelter, food vegetarian fish, and prevent green water. Plants also absorb carbon dioxide, waste products, contribute oxygen to the water and promote growth of algae, tiny worms, rotifers and protozoa, the supply of live food for fish.
Lighting is important if you want your plants to grow successfully. They need 12-14 hours of light each day, like in nature. Opinions vary on how much light the plants need to live, but generally 3.5 watts per gallon works well. CFLs and par 20, 50-watt halogen bulbs do the job well, so experiment with different types Lighting to find what works best for your plants.
Plants also need the right nutrients to stay healthy and green. Everything works together well planned in an aquarium for the maintenance of the plants Fed is not a difficult prospect. Nutrients to feed the plants come from the fish in the tank – you can add more if needed. Fertilization is also very easy because the plants are capable of using fish waste, naturally, as a fertilizer. You can add commercial fertilizer when you change the water but it is usually best to follow the "less is more" philosophy when it comes to paying their plants. Too much fertilizer can cause problems with algae growth in the tank, and you can always add more if needed.
What about water temperature? The Most aquatic plants thrive in water temperatures between 72F and 78f. The pH of water is also important – a pH of 6.8 to 7.8 is ideal.
Snails are another natural components that help the overall health of aquatic environments. The snails clean food plants and small algae, since it crawl through the leaves and foliage. However, some snails can cause problems. Ramshorn, Pond, and other species eat the leaves instead of cleaning them, and can cause damage unwanted. Fortunately, it is very easy to remove pesky snails. Simply place the lettuce leaves on top of the aquarium to attract snails – to eliminate all network once all the snails have been collected in the pieces of lettuce.
Before placing new plants in your aquarium, rinse with warm water to remove insects you do not want to invade the aquarium. Healthy plants have strong roots and leaves of signature, so this is what you should look for when purchasing aquatic plants. Avoid plants that emit a strange smell, especially the bulbs, as this is an indication that the plant is not healthy and can not grow properly once placed in your tank.
The younger plants are generally better suited to transplantation, so keep this in mind as well. Although plants you buy will need a period of time to adjust, and may lose some leaves, do not panic. This is completely normal. To promote healthy new growth, remove dead leaves only shown, taking care not to damage the roots.
Aquatic plants make a beautiful addition to any aquarium and help keep the fish comfortable healthy and happy.
